The company

Passionate, curious, and innovative are a few words that describe our people. We are powering the future, connecting communities, and igniting innovation. Orion owns and operates the electricity distribution network that provides power to central Canterbury. As the third largest electricity distribution network in New Zealand, we cover remote rural areas, regional towns, and the city of Christchurch.

We are an essential service and take our responsibilities seriously. We are community owned and working here means a career with meaning and purpose that makes a difference in your very own neighbourhood.

The role

Trees don't always grow where we'd like them to. That's where you come in. We're growing our Vegetation team and creating an additional Contract Manager role to help keep our electricity network safe, reliable and resilient.

This isn't a role that's spent behind a desk. One day you'll be planning vegetation maintenance programmes, the next you'll be meeting with landowners, working alongside contractors or out on the network ensuring work is delivered safely and to a high standard.

If you enjoy building relationships, solving problems, getting out into the field and making decisions that have a real impact on the community, this is one of those opportunities that doesn't come around often.

  • Take ownership of vegetation maintenance programmes that keep our network safe, reliable and resilient

  • Build strong relationships with landowners, contractors and colleagues to achieve the best outcomes for everyone involved

  • Get out on the network, visiting sites across urban and rural areas to support planning, delivery and quality outcomes

  • Coordinate planned and reactive vegetation work ensuring it is delivered safely, efficiently and to a high standard

  • Manage contractor performance, budgets, quotations and work schedules while keeping customers front of mind

  • Work closely with stakeholders to navigate access, resolve issues and keep projects moving

  • Help shape a growing function by identifying opportunities to improve processes, service delivery and customer experience

About you

  • Experience in vegetation management, utilities, civil, contracting or another operational environment would be highly regarded

  • A relevant qualification - Certificate in Arboriculture (Level 4) will set you up for success

  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills ability to build trusted relationships with landowners, contractors and across the business

  • Comfortable balancing time between the office and the field with rural travel simply part of the role

  • Highly organised and able to keep multiple work programmes moving while adapting to changing priorities

  • A practical problem solver who enjoys finding solutions that balance safety, customer needs and operational priorities

What they offer

You'll find at Orion, you can come as you are and just be you. You will be joining a workplace that values who you are, the work you do, and the way you think.

Importantly, we offer:

  • Flexible working arrangements, and flexible locations with our Head office in Burnside and satellite offices in Rolleston and Ferrymead

  • Three days of “My Days” leave

  • A broad range of workplace benefits from a wellbeing allowance to access to our holiday house in Hanmer!

You might be surprised to find out that the company that brings the power to your home is innovative, inclusive, progressive, and quite good fun.
