The role

Understanding the environment we are in is critical to our success, this 12-month fixed term contract for Energy & Markets Insight Specialist will ensure we are developing and building on regional energy modelling capabilities to explore a range of future energy scenarios and pathways. Creating actionable insights are essential to how we make our management decisions and empower our customers and communities.

If you are an expert in your field, love to work in large data sets and have an analytical outlook with an innovative approach, you'll want to explore the possibilities of this role.


  • Develop and apply energy, economic and market analytics modelling capability to support the design, development and optimisation of network investments

  • Deliver and monitor key drivers and indicators of progress towards an equitable transition for the local Canterbury area

  • Provide advice on current and future wholesale and retail energy markets including future price paths and emerging flexibility markets

  • Support the development of new energy-related decision support tools for our customers

  • Provide technical support and mentoring across Orion to build knowledge, insights and robust new energy related decisions

About you


  • A depth of understanding of the energy sector and electricity markets

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant subject or a depth of experience in a similar role

  • Strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills alongside economic and/or financial modelling

  • A genuine interest of future techniques and innovation processes

  • Strong interpersonal and relationship management skills with the ability to build credible relationships, influence and a customer focused outcome

  • Natural ability to connect, collaborate and build strong relationships and rapport

  • A curious, pro-active and innovative approach with the ability to think outside the box and not be afraid to try new things
