The company

Passionate, curious and innovative are a few words that describe our people. We are powering the future, connecting communities and igniting innovation. Orion owns and operates the electricity distribution network that provides power to central Canterbury. As the third largest electricity distribution network in New Zealand, we cover remote rural areas, regional towns and the city of Christchurch.

We are an essential service and take our responsibilities seriously. We are community owned and working here means a career with meaning and purpose that makes a difference in your very own neighbourhood.

The role

Are you a naturally curious geospatial professional who loves asking “why?”, digging deeper, and turning spatial data into meaningful insight? We're looking for an intuitive problem solver with strong peer engagement skills to join us for a 12-month fixed-term opportunity supporting a major Geospatial release schedule - including the transition from Hexagon to Esri.

This is a hands-on delivery-focused role where you'll work alongside engineering, asset, operations and digital teams to enhance geospatial data, web solutions, and enterprise GIS capabilities. If you thrive on collaboration, enjoy translating technical detail into practical outcomes, and can confidently engage across teams I'd love to hear from you.

  • Manage and enhance geospatial data across the electrical distribution network, ensuring accuracy, integrity and accessibility across enterprise systems

  • Deliver practical web and mobile GIS solutions using Esri technologies to improve real-time visibility and operational insight

  • Develop high-impact mapping applications, dashboards and spatial analytics to inform operations, engineering, asset management and network planning decisions

  • Collaborate across engineering, digital and asset teams to deliver fit-for-purpose geospatial solutions and continuously improve our platform capability

  • Support data migration and ETL workflows (FME), contributing to platform transition and alignment with enterprise data standard

About you

  • Proven experience with Esri technologies (ArcGIS Pro, Enterprise/Portal, Experience Builder, Field Maps, Dashboards) and enterprise spatial databases

  • Be intuitive and curious, with a natural drive to interrogate data and solve complex problems

  • Have strong peer engagement skills, building trust and collaborating effectively across multi-disciplinary teams

  • Ability to communicate clearly and confidently, translating technical geospatial concepts into practical outcomes for our users

  • Be comfortable operating in fast-paced project environments with multiple stakeholders

  • Knowledge and experience with Esri's Utility Network a bonus

  • Exposure to ETL workflows and tools such as FME a bonus

  • Utilities, infrastructure or asset management experience is a bonus, but not essential
