The company
Passionate, curious, and innovative are a few words that describe our people. We are powering the future, connecting communities, and igniting innovation. Orion owns and operates the electricity distribution network that provides power to central Canterbury. As the third largest electricity distribution network in New Zealand, we cover remote rural areas, regional towns, and the city of Christchurch.
We are an essential service and take our responsibilities seriously. We are community owned and working here means a career with meaning and purpose that makes a difference in your very own neighbourhood.
The role
Behind every reliable network is an engineer who sees problems before anyone else does. Someone who's just as comfortable designing enterprise infrastructure as they are automating it, strengthening security, and finding smarter ways to do things.
Due to continued growth, we're looking for a Network & Security Engineer. You'll play a key role in designing, building and supporting our enterprise network across on-premise, cloud and Operational Technology (OT) environments to ensure our networks are secure, resilient and ready for whatever comes next.
This is a technically substantial, hands-on engineering role where you'll have the opportunity to influence how we engineer, automate and secure our environments. There's no team to manage, but there is plenty of scope to lead technically, challenge the status quo, and shape the future of our network capability alongside a team that values expertise, collaboration and practical problem-solving.
Design, build and support secure, resilient enterprise network infrastructure while engineering solutions across on-premise, cloud and hybrid environments
Work alongside our OT (Operational Technology) teams to deliver reliable connectivity across critical operational systems
Implement network automation using Python, Ansible or similar tools to simplify and improve operations
Strengthen our security posture through modern firewalls, network segmentation, IDS/IPS and vulnerability management
Monitor network performance, proactively identifying opportunities to improve reliability and resilience
Lead technical improvements across network standards, tooling and engineering practices
Partner with vendors, contractors and internal stakeholders to deliver high-quality outcomes
About you
You're an experienced Network Engineer who enjoys getting into the detail while still seeing the bigger picture. You naturally look for smarter ways of doing things, communicate technical concepts in a way others understand and enjoy collaborating across teams to solve problems.
You'll likely bring:
Strong depth of experience designing and supporting enterprise networks
Experience with routing, switching, wireless networking and next-generation firewalls
Cloud networking experience across Azure, AWS or similar platforms
Automation skills using Python, Ansible or equivalent scripting tools
A solid understanding of network security, vulnerability management and modern security practices
Experience working in environments where reliability, security and resilience are critical
A collaborative approach and the confidence to influence technical decisions without needing formal leadership authority
