The company
Passionate, curious and innovative are a few words that describe our people. We are powering the future, connecting communities and igniting innovation. Orion owns and operates the electricity distribution network that provides power to central Canterbury. As the third largest electricity distribution network in New Zealand, we cover remote rural areas, regional towns and the city of Christchurch.
We are an essential service and take our responsibilities seriously. We are community owned and working here means a career with meaning and purpose that makes a difference in your very own neighbourhood.
The role
We are looking for a Network Operator (Urban) to keep our electrical network running safely and reliably for our communities. Working under the direction of our Network Controllers, you'll carry out critical switching operations across HV and LV equipment, manage network events, and act as the "eyes and ears" in the field providing real-time updates that directly support safe and effective decision-making.
This is a hands-on role where your technical capability and sound judgement make a genuine difference.
This position offers variety, responsibility and purpose where no two days are the same. If you're safety-focused, calm under pressure and take pride in delivering high-quality work in a critical infrastructure environment, this is your opportunity to be part of something that truly matters.
Carry out day to day electricity network switching procedures on HV to LV equipment.
Provide continuous situation reports to our Network Controllers regarding broken power lines, damaged cables and other safety related incidents.
Assist with electrical network fault-finding (patrolling of lines, small repair work and sectionalising damaged parts of the network).
Attend accidents and fires that involve our network when emergency services require our attendance, customer premise faults including minor service main repairs and HV/LV customer fuse replacements.
Gather statistical information related to electrical network loadings and operations
About you
Be available for emergency and customer callouts when on standby.
Ability to work autonomously at remote locations.
Have a current New Zealand Practicing License as an Electrician.
Experience in operating HV and LV power system equipment.
Relevant advanced trade certificate would be an advantage.
You'll be driving a 4-wheel drive vehicle equipped with all the tools required.
