Passionate, curious and innovative are a few words that describe our people. We are powering the future, connecting communities and igniting innovation. Orion owns and operates the electricity distribution network that provides power to central Canterbury. As the third largest electricity distribution network in New Zealand, we cover remote rural areas, regional towns and the city of Christchurch.

We are an essential service and take our responsibilities seriously. We are community owned and working here means a career with meaning and purpose that makes a difference in your very own neighbourhood.

The role

At Orion we collect large volumes of structured data (smart metering data, asset information) and unstructured data (drone images, customer enquiries) to make our network smarter and more efficient. Data can drive decisions that make a genuine difference, and you can help make that happen. We're searching for a Senior Data Engineer who loves solving complex problems, thrives in a supportive team and wants to see their work make a real impact across the business and the community.

You'll design, develop and enhance the data services that sit at the heart of our decision-making, from pipelines and warehousing to analytics and visualisation. Your work enables meaningful insights for teams across the business, helping us operate a resilient network and support a cleaner energy future.

This is a role for someone who loves solving complex problems, thrives on variety, and enjoys helping others understand and use data confidently.

  • Design and develop data pipelines, warehousing, reporting and analytical solutions

  • Shape data infrastructure across reporting, analytics, machine learning and emerging technologies

  • Support data modelling, acquisition, processing and presentation, ensuring quality, governance and documentation

  • Build dashboards, visualisations and predictive models that turn data into meaningful insights

  • Translate complex analysis into clear insights and manage analytical workstreams using agile or predictive methods

  • Collaborate with teams across the business lifting data literacy and driving continuous improvement

  • Support pragmatic data governance and embed strong end-to-end data lifecycle practices

About you

  • Previous experience in data engineering or similar roles delivering strong outcomes

  • Strong hands-on skills with Python, SQL and big-data technologies (Hadoop, Spark, Databricks).

  • Experience with modern data - knowledge of Databricks, Snowflake or Azure are an advantage

  • Expertise across the Microsoft stack: Azure, SQL, Power BI, Power Apps with a familiarity of Agile, DevOps tools and user-story driven delivery

  • Strong analytical capability, data modelling experience, and interest in machine learning/AI

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to simplify complexity while build strong relationships

  • A collaborative, growth-oriented mindset and the confidence to influence, guide and support others
