The company

Passionate, curious, and innovative are a few words that describe our people. We are powering the future, connecting communities, and igniting innovation. Orion owns and operates the electricity distribution network that provides power to central Canterbury. As the third largest electricity distribution network in New Zealand, we cover remote rural areas, regional towns, and the city of Christchurch.

We are an essential service and take our responsibilities seriously. We are community owned and working here means a career with meaning and purpose that makes a difference in your very own neighbourhood.

The role

Step into a role where you'll be at the heart of keeping our network safe, secure and reliable. As a Technical Engineer in our Reticulation team you'll apply your expertise across underground cables, systems and equipment to real-world challenges that directly impact network performance. It's a role for someone who enjoys getting into the detail, while still seeing the bigger picture.

You'll work closely with internal teams, suppliers, manufacturers and service partners building strong relationships and influencing outcomes. From supporting design and installation through to testing, investigations and continuous improvement, your input will shape how we operate.

If you enjoy a mix of analysis, hands-on engineering and problem-solving and want to keep growing your capability, this is a role where you can make an impact from day one.

  • Develop and evolve engineering standards and specifications that set the benchmark for quality and performance

  • Assess equipment failures and technical issues providing clear and practical recommendations that drive the right outcomes

  • Act as a trusted technical expert offering guidance that supports confident decision-making across the business

  • Lead and contribute to technical investigations and reporting, turning insights into continuous improvement

  • Partner with manufacturers and suppliers to shape technical requirements and ensure assets meet our safety, quality and performance standards

  • Lift capability across teams and service providers through practical, hands-on training and knowledge sharing

About you

  • Proven experience in a similar technical engineering role, with an NZDE (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline and/or demonstrated capability

  • A confident communicator with a customer-focused mindset

  • A collaborative, team-first approach - someone who builds strong working relationships and contributes to shared success

  • Solid understanding of relevant legislation and standards, including the Electricity Act 1992, Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, and Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010

  • Strong technical knowledge across underground cables, systems and reticulation equipment, from low voltage through to 66kV
