The company

Passionate, curious and innovative are a few words that describe our people. We are powering the future, connecting communities and igniting innovation. Orion owns and operates the electricity distribution network that provides power to central Canterbury. As the third largest electricity distribution network in New Zealand, we cover remote rural areas, regional towns and the city of Christchurch.

We are an essential service and take our responsibilities seriously. We are community owned and working here means a career with meaning and purpose that makes a difference in your very own neighbourhood.

The role

We're looking for an experienced Trainer Coach (Network Operation) to help lift capability, strengthen safety culture, and ensure everyone working on our network goes home safe, every day.

This role is ideal for a seasoned electricity network professional who enjoys sharing knowledge, coaching others in real-world environments, and helping shape how safe work is done across the industry. You'll spend time both in the classroom and in the field, helping translate standards, procedures and legislation into practical, safe behaviours that stick.

You'll act as a trusted technical and operational subject matter expert, partnering closely with our field teams, contractors, and service delivery partners. You'll design, deliver and continuously improve training and coaching that builds real capability, not just compliance.

  • Deliver practical safety risk management and network operations training through field-based coaching, face-to-face sessions and online learning

  • Develop, maintain and deliver operational training content and assessments aligned to legislation, industry guidance and Orion standards

  • Coach field crews and leaders to consistently apply safe, competent practices in day-to-day network operations

  • Support the planning and delivery of the annual training and coaching programme, including scheduling and operational resourcing

  • Contribute to the development, review and application of network operating procedures, standards and access documentation

  • Maintain personal operational competency and use audits, observations and performance data to improve training and operational outcomes

About you

  • Level 6 NZDE (Electrical) or equivalent practical experience with a current electrical registration and practising licence

  • Strong operational experience in transmission and/or distribution environments with sound knowledge of network operations, safety-critical risk management and regulatory requirements

  • Proven credibility in the field, with the ability to coach, influence and guide safe work practices through real-world operational experience

  • Experience delivering technical training, assessments or structured coaching that translates standards and legislation into practical, usable outcomes

  • Strong communication skills and the confidence to work with field crews, leaders, contractors and service delivery partners

  • A practical, organised approach to planning work, setting priorities and managing time across both field and office environments

  • A continuous improvement mindset, using audits, observations and data to lift safety performance and operational capability

What they offer

You'll find at Orion, you can come as you are and just be you. You will be joining a workplace that values who you are, the work you do, and the way you think.

Importantly, we offer:

  • Flexible working arrangements, and flexible locations with our Head office in Burnside and satellite offices in Rolleston and Ferrymead

  • Three days of “My Days” leave

  • A broad range of workplace benefits, from a wellbeing allowance to our holiday house in Hanmer!
